history

Beginnings

The history of the tram in today's Ennepe-Ruhr district began on May 10, 1895, when the mayor of the city of Gevelsberg and representatives of the communities in the Schwelm district met with representatives from Schuckert & Co. and decided to switch between the tram networks in Hagen and Barmen to found his own tram company. On October 28, 1895, it was decided that the communities should proceed independently, as the business from the two places had already penetrated into the area of the district. On May 7, 1897, the city of Gevelsberg negotiated with Siemens & Halske about the construction of a tram between Gevelsberg and Milspe . Finally, on August 5, 1897 , the Hagener Straßenbahn AG received the concession to build and operate the line from Hagen via Gevelsberg and Milspe to Schwelm . Until April 1900, however, only the section to Haspe went into operation. At the same time, the Barmer tram built a line to Milspe and opened it on August 24, 1897.

On July 13, 1906, representatives of the communities of Gevelsberg, Mühlinghausen and Voerde met and decided to found the Gevelsberg-Milspe-Voerde tram company. In accordance with the share of the planned route in their urban area, the municipalities received shares in the company. The distribution was as follows: Gevelsberg 46.6%, Milspe 22.6% and Voerde 30.8%.

The first section with a length of 9.31 kilometers was opened on February 24, 1907. Another section of 2.58 kilometers was added on May 19, 1909. Due to the difficult topography, the route had numerous steep sections.

From the First World War

During the First World War , like other companies, the company suffered from the withdrawal of personnel and a lack of material. New construction and expansion measures, such as the takeover and electrification of the Haspe – Voerde – Breckerfeld railway , were canceled. In return, goods and food were transported.

After the war, passenger performance fell from 2.9 million passengers to 1.2 million in 1923. After increasing the number of passengers back to 2½ million in 1929, they fell back to 1.22 million by 1933 due to the high unemployment during the global economic crisis . Because of these difficulties, an operating company was founded on September 1, 1933.

From the Second World War

After the railway suffered only minor damage in the Second World War , operations were stopped on April 13, 1945 shortly before the Allied invasion. On June 4, 1945, operations began again. Since the railway was more and more exposed to the growing road traffic due to numerous tracks in the lateral position of the streets, there were repeated incidents. Running boards and handles were torn off by trucks , especially on federal highway 7 . After the concession was only to be extended with the condition that the railway was to be relocated to its own track structure, it was decided on February 3 and June 8, 1955 to shut down tram operations.

From 1956

On March 31, 1956, the operation of the last tram route was switched to omnibus operation. In 1965 the VER got its current name. Today the company serves four cities and two counties. In 2002, over five million bus kilometers were covered.

From 2000

In 2015, the district council decided to counter the increasing deficit of the VER through closer cooperation with neighboring transport companies. Negotiations have been started with the Bogestra to explore the possibilities. As a result, it was announced in 2016 that Bogestra and VER wanted to set up a joint subsidiary . The VER would have remained in place for further use of the tax cross-link , but would have been reduced to an empty shell. However, this plan could not be implemented, so that the Bogestra should now become a minority shareholder of the VER. The aim is to avoid that costs incurred in the Ennepe-Ruhr district are taken over by the Bogestra owners Gelsenkirchen and Bochum . Central tasks can and should be taken over by the Bogestra. The joint purchase of fuel was the beginning of the cooperation.

VER has been a member of the Eastern Ruhr Area Cooperation (KÖR) since November 2017 and works with the neighboring companies Bogestra (Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG), Vestische , DSW21 (Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG), HCR (Tram Herne-Castrop-Rauxel GmbH) and Hagener Straßenbahn AG together.
