history

The first German articulated railcar from 1926, the so-called "Harkortwagen" - received for a long time as a museum car in Duisburg, later sold.

On January 1, 1940, the Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft AG was founded. In it the Duisburger Straßenbahnen GmbH , the Kreis Ruhrorter Straßenbahn AG and the Städtische Straßenbahnen Hamborn were united. With this, all tram lines in the area of the city of Duisburg were united under one roof. The shares in STOAG in Oberhausen were also sold to the city of Duisburg in the course of this re-establishment. In 1942 the company operated a total of 23 lines. As a result of the Second World War , in 1945, as with many other companies in the Ruhr area, traffic had to be stopped.

On May 2, 1945, line 14 from Dinslaken to Meiderich was the first to resume operations after the shutdowns . By 1950, nine standard-gauge lines and eleven meter-gauge lines could be put back into operation. However, in 1951 and 1952 one line each was switched to bus transport.

The longest trolleybus route in Germany ran from December 18, 1954 to May 28, 1967 on an almost 34-kilometer stretch from Ruhrort via Homberg , Moers , Repelen, Kamp-Lintfort and Rheinberg to Ossenberg , partly on a former tram route . The trolleybus routes leading to Duisburg were part of the Moers trolleybus , in which DVG was involved with two vehicles and 1.35 kilometers of route.

The standardization of the gauges in the city area soon began. Initially, it was considered to convert all routes to meter gauge in order to create a uniform network from Bochum via Gelsenkirchen , Essen , Mülheim , Oberhausen , Duisburg , Moers to Krefeld . In the end, however, only the most important north-south connections in connection with the normal-gauge network in Düsseldorf were expanded and all other routes were converted to bus operation.

On May 2, 1959, the largest re-gauging project of a German local transport company was completed. After the renovation, which cost 4.6 million Deutschmarks, seven lines were initially retained. The network was reduced to a total of 65.1 km by the end of the 1960s.

In 1970 the state of North Rhine-Westphalia presented a general transport plan for the Ruhr area. In addition to the systematic expansion of the S-Bahn , a city-wide light rail system was to be created. Thereafter, the routes from Dinslaken via Hamborn, Meiderich, the city center and Huckingen to Düsseldorf, from Moers via Ruhrort and the city center to Mülheim and from Ruhrort to Marxloh were to be built in Duisburg .

DVG logos: left approx. 1970, center approx. 1990, right the current logo

The DVG has been a member of the VRR , the largest transport association in Europe , since January 1st, 1980 . With accession, a uniform system of line numbering was also introduced. In addition to Oberhausen, Duisburg was assigned the timetable area 9 , with the exception of a few basic renaming, all line numbers were preceded by a “9”, the tram and bus routes were three-digit. Until 1980, a tram line "1" ran in many cities; confusion was no longer possible. The exception mentioned was line D ; it was renumbered 79 and U 79, respectively.

After the incorporation of the cities of Homberg and Rheinhausen on the left bank of the Rhine in 1975, the NIAG route network was taken over on January 1, 1985 and exchanged for routes in the former districts of Dinslaken and Rees. NIAG still has a large share of Duisburg bus traffic, especially in the west of the city, direct connections from Duisburg main station to the NIAG service area (including Moers , Geldern , Vluyn ) and via joint transport.

The Via network

Since July 1, 2010, the transport companies DVG (Duisburg), EVAG (Essen) and MVG (Mülheim an der Ruhr) have merged into a joint venture Via Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH on an operational level. This was terminated by DVG on December 31, 2016.

Former routes of trams and trolleybuses

Lines of the tram 1950

For historical reasons, the tram networks north and south of the Ruhr were incompatible due to different gauges. While the tram routes in the city of Duisburg (including two routes to the Ruhrorter Friedrichsplatz and to the Duisburg-Meiderich Süd train station ) were built entirely in standard gauge , in the formerly independent city of Hamborn, the meter gauge , which was also used in neighboring Oberhausen, was used.

Routes of the tram in 1959

In order to create better traffic connections between the north and south of the city, individual routes were changed from meter gauge to standard gauge. As a result, individual routes were abandoned because they could no longer be operated sensibly in island operation, but the conversion would not have been economical (especially in Dinslaken and to Beeckerwerth).

Lines of the tram in 1971

All lines now run over standard gauge tracks. The meter-gauge routes that had remained so far were aligned with Oberhausen, and when the tram was shut down there, these routes were also given up.

1On September 30, 1979, the line from the Kuhtor to the Hochfeld Süd station was taken out of service, line 2 abandoned. The tracks will be expanded up to Marientor, the rest of the tracks have been unused in the streets of Hochfeld for 13 years.
2 On March 25, 1972, the line from the Marientor to the Kupferhütte was shut down, and line 3 was abandoned.
3On March 31, 1975, the last stop on line 4 on Koloniestrasse was closed. While the switches at the Sternbuschweg intersection were being expanded, the tracks up to Wildstrasse could still be seen in the street for a long time.

Lines of the tram 1983

With the establishment of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr in 1980, new, regionally distinguishable line numbers were introduced. The routing remained largely unchanged, there were no closures in this context, line 904 (on the existing route) even extended to Laar.

Numerous lines are used by various subcontractors on behalf of the respective operators. DVG itself uses subcontractors “Der Homberger” from Duisburg, “Look Busreisen” from Moers, “WEGA Reisen” from Ratingen, “Urban Reisen” from Gladbeck, “Divan Reisen” from Duisburg and “DB Rheinlandbus” on several lines Wesel a.

As a special feature, lines 905, 906 and 907 are allowed to cross the Mattlerbusch Revierpark in the north of Duisburg. Line 945 only runs at events in the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena .

In addition, the entry and exit journeys known as “direct journeys” from the Am Unkelstein depot to the respective end stations can be used at the network rate, but the timetables are not published in the electronic timetable or in the timetable book. The timetables for these journeys can only be found at a few stops, so that these journeys are relatively unknown.

Fleet

Light rail / tram

The DVG light rail vehicle fleet consists of 18 type B80C cars for the U79 line , four of which had a dining car compartment until the mid-1990s, and originally 46 GT 10 NC-DU trams for lines 901–903 , also known as "N-Wagen". In addition, there was a single so-called Variobahn car (GT6ND), which was sold to a hotel in Norway in 2015. The vehicles of the type GT 10 NC-DU were originally eight-axle cars. In 1996, the DVG decided to extend it to ten - axle vehicles by means of a low-floor center section in order to increase the capacity and enable barrier-free entry.

A renovation program was carried out to prevent corrosion damage in all 46 vehicles of the type GT 10 NC-DU , but only for 38 of the vehicles, so that there will not be enough vehicles available until the next new purchase (see below). Until then, there will be rail replacement traffic on the north branch of line 901 between the Scholtenhofstraße stop and Obermarxloh loop on weekdays.

The DVG is traditionally known for its numerous conversions to tram cars that it carried out in-house. A current, exemplary example is the car 1000: At the beginning of the 1980s it served as a prototype of the GT 8 NC-DU to be purchased (including installation of a chopper control). At the beginning of the 1990s, this eight-axle articulated railcar of the type GT 8 from 1966 was converted into a bidirectional car with an optical alignment of the front design to the GT 8 NC-DU.In 1996 it was expanded to a ten -axle vehicle with a low-floor self-made middle section. Car 1000 was again used as a prototype, this time for the extension of the eight-axle GT 8 NC-DU.

The current DVG light rail and tram fleet:

  • Light rail car B 80C:
    • Year of construction 1983: 4701 - 4714
    • Year of construction 1984: 4715 - 4718 (former dining car)
  • GT 10 NC-DU :
    • Year of construction 1996: 1000 (conversion from eight-axle articulated multiple units from 1966)
    • Year of construction 1986: 1001 - 1014 (car 1008 was retired, car 1009 is parked after a serious accident)
    • Year of construction 1988: 1015 - 1025 (cars 1017 and 1019 have been retired)
    • Year of construction 1991: 1026 - 1035 (car 1035 was retired)
    • Year of construction 1992: 1036 - 1040 (cars 1038 and 1039 have been retired)
    • Year of construction 1993: 1041 - 1045

All light rail and tram vehicles are stationed in the Grunewald depot.

Renewal of the tram fleet

Due to the lack of vehicles due to corrosion, the lack of air conditioning and the low proportion of low-floor vehicles in the cars (20%), new vehicles were put out to tender in 2017: Bombardier Transportation will deliver 47 Bombardier Flexity Classic trams and will take care of their maintenance for 24 years, with the option of an extension to 32 Years. The order is worth 140 million euros.

The new tracks, named NF 4, will be 34 meters long and 2.30 meters wide. With the introduction of this vehicle type, an air conditioning system will also be installed in DVG trams for the first time. The low-floor share is 70% and the capacity of the vehicles will be increased from 175 to 200 passengers.

Also planned is the acquisition of 18 new light rail vehicles to replace the so-called B-cars , which run in cooperation with the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn on the U79 line. Since these vehicles will have reached the end of their service life in the near future, use beyond the year 2025 does not make economic sense. The tender calls for 18 new light rail vehicles with a length of 28 meters and a width of 2.65 meters to be procured. The call for tenders is scheduled to begin in March 2019, and the contract with a volume of 61 million euros is expected to be awarded in the first quarter of 2020. The vehicles will not be used for the first time before 2024. In addition to large multi-purpose areas for wheelchair users and prams, the new carriages will also feature air conditioning. This means that from 2025 the entire DVG fleet will be air-conditioned.

omnibus

The bus fleet consists for the most part of Mercedes-Benz Citaro vehicles from EvoBus , both solo and articulated buses . In 2006, the number of units was well over 100, so the DVG has the largest fleet of this type in the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR). Before the Citaro wagons were purchased, the Mercedes-Benz O 405 was DVG's standard vehicle. A total of 96 vehicles of this type had been purchased from 1985 to 1993.

The buses are located in the Am Unkelstein depot in the Kaßlerfeld district, not far from the inner harbor .

environmental Protection

Since the beginning of 2018, all DVG trams and light rail vehicles and their operating buildings have been supplied with electricity from hydropower. This should save 17,000 tons of CO 2 per year . In addition, all buses meet at least the Euro 4 emissions standard while around 40% of the buses meet the Euro 6 emissions standard.

There are also plans to convert bus route 934 completely to electric buses by 2020. The tender for the delivery of 7 electric buses with a volume of 6.1 million euros is currently running (as of September 2019).

Security and stewardship at DVG

Logo of the SRD successor octeo MULTISERVICES GmbH in the DVV group

The DVG uses a uniformed municipal security service to guard the objects and facilities, patrol the vehicles and carry out other security tasks , which is provided by the municipal octeo MULTISERVICES GmbH (formerly SRD), which is also part of the municipal DVV group. The security service is carried out in close cooperation with the security authorities of the federal police station in Duisburg Hbf , the police in Duisburg and the city of Duisburg's public order office, as well as with the security service of Deutsche Bahn (for the area around the Duisburg central station).

The operations control center (BLZ) of the DVG takes over the function of the operations control center and dispatch. From there there are leased lines to the EGON control center of the Duisburg police and the FLORIAN control center of the Duisburg fire brigade . The uniformed forces can be recognized by their blue and black clothing.

The security and stewardship service at DVG is not to be confused with the DVG Service (formerly DVG Ordnungsdienst ), which is used as a joint measure with ARGE Duisburg or the company for employment promotion GfB of the city of Duisburg. He wears DVG uniforms and dark gray jackets with the label DVG Service in connection with a DVG company ID, but does not perform security or guarding tasks. In contrast to the regular security and stewardship service, the ticket inspection service is not carried out by the appropriate service personnel. The focus of the activities of these service staff lies in providing passenger information and providing assistance with problems such as boarding assistance for wheelchair users and senior citizen escort services; This service is aimed at older passengers who are picked up at the front door and accompanied in DVG vehicles. However, the senior escort service is not a driving service for people with reduced mobility, but an additional service for a specific target group.

An employment measure at DVG Service usually lasts nine months. Since September 2009, however, a measure has been running in which seven service staff receive special one-year training at DVG. These forces are to be deployed in the security and stewardship service after the training measure has been completed. However, service tasks and no guarding activities should continue to be carried out there (for example as part of so-called station services at individual underground stations).
