The SWK MOBIL GmbH is a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Krefeld AG (SWK) and supplied as a public transport company , the city Krefeld and its western area ( Viersen ). The company is a member of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and was a member of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Niederrhein (VGN) until it was absorbed into the VRR on January 1, 2012 .
tram
The predecessor company KREVAG was founded on January 1, 1884 as Crefeld-Uerdinger Localbahn AG by the city of Krefeld as the operating company of the 40-year licensed railway built by the Berlin company Eisenbahnbau- und Betriebs-Gesellschaft Reymer und Masch in 1883 on behalf of the city. Within a year they built three meter-gauge steam railway lines to the neighboring towns and a horse-drawn tram to connect these two railways in the city.
Since December 15, 1898, the city has been served by Europe's first regular-gauge electric rapid transit railway , the K-Bahn operated by the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft AG . Since this railway was well received, the horse-drawn railway reached its capacity limit and the steam railway was not very popular because of its noise and exhaust gases, the city concluded the concession agreement with the operator of the railway on September 11 and September 13, 1899 provided for the electrification of all routes. In addition, six more lines were to be built by July 1, 1902. The original contract stipulated that the company should become the property of the city on December 31, 1942. The local railway became the city's own operation.
To finance the renovation and expansion work, the company, which had been called Crefelder Straßenbahn AG since 1900 , raised 3.5 million marks in additional capital.
Freight transports were added from 1917. Since this also included the transport of coal, a connection was established between Traar and Moers on February 8, 1918, and a direct connection was made to Moers Homberger Straßenbahn GmbH . In the west there was a connection to the Munich-Gladbach tram (today the Gladbach district of Mönchengladbach ) in Schiefbahn . From the time of completion, four steam-powered trains operated on these tracks between Moers, Krefeld, Willich , Munich-Gladbach and Rheydt .
From 1931 the city of Krefeld was the sole owner of the tram. From August 1st, it traded under the name Krefelder Verkehrs AG , or KREVAG for short . With the KEG, the Krefeld Railway Company , they started a joint venture on January 1, 1933. Little by little, routes were discontinued and shortened. On October 8, 1933, line 5 was closed, and on December 31, 1935, the KEG stopped its passenger services.
There were restrictions due to the war. So the KEG had to resume its passenger traffic, since the bus operation was stopped in 1939.
From December 3, 1949 to May 29, 1964, the Krefeld trolleybus supplemented the tram, it consisted of a single line with the number 19 and ran from the main station to Benrad.
In 1978 the Crefeld-Kreis Kempener Industrie-Eisenbahn Gesellschaft , now known as KEG , was incorporated. At this time, the considerations for a large-scale suburban and light rail network in North Rhine-Westphalia came up. In Krefeld, for example, the tram coming from Düsseldorf should be extended to Hüls and disappear into a tunnel in the city center . This project has not yet been implemented.
From January 1, 1980, the city of Krefeld, and thus KREVAG, has been a member of the VRR . The lines in this area were all given a leading 0 and lines 1–4 became lines 041–044 .
In 1990 KREVAG was merged with Stadtwerke Krefeld GmbH.
On September 6, 1996, the modernized depot was opened on Weeserweg. The cost of the renovation and modernization amounted to around 100 million DM .
In 1997 a new appraisal for the tram was commissioned. This suggested reactivating the tram lines from Krefeld to Willich and Moers. The tram should also be extended from Friedrichsplatz via the ice stadium to Benrader Straße , from Wilhelmsplatz in St. Tönis to Vorst and in Hüls from the depot to the town center. These proposals never got beyond the planning stage.
The transport company was spun off again in 2002 as a subsidiary, SWK MOBIL GmbH . At that time, the network consisted of four lines and comprised around 46 kilometers of line length and 37.7 kilometers of route length. Of these, 15.8 kilometers are laid on a separate track and run virtually unaffected by individual traffic.
Current
SWK MOBIL has 23 bus and 4 tram lines. While the bus lines go to the Dutch border, the tram lines only run in Krefeld and St. Tönis . All trams and the U76 ( Düsseldorf-Krefeld light rail line ) run together in the center of the city, on the Ostwall on meter and standard-gauge double tracks. Stadtwerke also operates the historic Schluff railway that runs from St. Tönis to Hülser Berg . Freight traffic is also carried out on their tracks.

development
SWK MOBIL won the tender for the Bocholt city bus and was originally scheduled to start operating on January 1, 2010. Due to ambiguities in terms of procurement law, the Münster Public Procurement Chamber had lodged an appeal, so that operations only started on July 1, 2010. Initially, buses from SWK MOBIL GmbH were used for a transitional period of one month, and since August 1, 2010 with the new vehicles from the subsidiary SWK FAHRSERVICE GmbH, which was founded specifically to carry out the traffic in Bocholt. Since January 9, 2014, SWK FAHRSERVICE has also been operating the express bus line S75 ("Sprinterbus") between Bocholt and Münster with four double-decker buses, which has expanded the operating activities further.
In August 2019, Stadtwerke Krefeld and the company ioki launched "my SWCAR", a night service bookable via app with five electrified vehicles from the English manufacturer LEVC .
