Reymer & Masch

The railway construction and operating company Reymer & Masch was a Berlin company. It built tram and railroad tracks in the 1880s and partly operated them itself. It was founded on January 31, 1880 by the two Berlin contractors Otto Reymer and Otto Masch. It was active at least until 1888, about the further history of the company no information is available.

The company Reymer & Masch received the concession for a horse-drawn tram in Potsdam in 1880 and thus founded the Potsdam tram . The first line opened on May 12, 1880, and two more lines followed a few months later. The operator was the Potsdam tram company. The license granted from 1880 was limited to 25 years. On January 1, 1904, the operation was taken over by the city and continued as the Potsdam municipal tram. The operation still exists today.

The first line of the Poznan tram was opened on July 30, 1880 by Reymer & Masch. Initially there were few passengers and the horse-drawn tram was boycotted by the Polish residents of the city because the wagons were only labeled in German. The company was soon bought up by the Poznan Horse Railway Company, which expanded the network. The area became Polish in 1919 and trams still run there today.

In 1881 Reymer & Masch built the first line of the Flensburg tram as a standard-gauge horse-drawn tram. From 1889 the operation was profitable. The 25-year concession ended in 1906 and the city took over the business. The last tram in Flensburg ran in 1973.

In 1883 the city of Krefeld commissioned the Berlin-based company Eisenbahnbau- und Betriebs-Gesellschaft Reymer und Masch to build a tram network. Within a year it built three meter-gauge steam railway lines to neighboring places and a horse-drawn tram to connect these lines in the city area. On January 1, 1884, the city founded the Crefeld-Uerdinger Localbahn AG and granted it a 40-year concession to operate the trams in Krefeld. From 1931 the city of Krefeld was the sole owner of the tram and operated 15 lines. The Krefeld tram still exists today, but only comprises four lines.

Reymer & Masch opened the Wilmersdorf - Schmargendorfer steam tram on May 18, 1888 . She drove from Schöneberg via Wilmersdorf to Schmargendorf. From December 22, 1888, the line was operated together with other lines by the Berlin Steam Tram Consortium , from 1898 as the West Berlin Suburb Railway (WBV). All of the places mentioned have belonged to Berlin since 1920. The tram line was discontinued in 1957.

The company was also involved in the construction of railway systems, including the Zittau narrow-gauge railway and the Paulinenau train station in Neuruppin.
