The Abellio Rail NRW GmbH ( ABRN ), headquartered in Hagen is a private railway company (PSC), the rail lines in regional transport in North Rhine-Westphalia operates. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Abellio GmbH, based in Berlin, which in turn is a subsidiary of Abellio Transport Holding BV, which is owned by the Dutch state railway, Nederlandse Spoorwegen . Abellio Rail NRW was founded on September 6, 2005.
Abellio Rail NRW transports over 20 million passengers annually on over 20 million train kilometers. The license as an EVU has existed since December 11, 2005.
Line network
Emscher-Ruhrtal network
From December 2005 to December 2019, the Abellio Rail NRW operating on behalf of the transport association Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), the Emscher-Ruhr valley network in North Rhine-Westphalia, consisting of the lines RB 40 (Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn) of food over Wattenscheid by Hagen and RB 46 ( Glückauf-Bahn ) from Bochum via Wanne-Eickel to Gelsenkirchen . In December 2007, the RB 40 was integrated into the Ruhr-Sieg network, which was also newly acquired by Abellio Rail NRW, and the RB 46 line was assigned to the Ruhr-Sieg network in December 2019.
On the RB 46 line, three Alstom Coradia LINT 41 / H multiple units are used, which provide an annual performance of 0.4 million train kilometers and are owned by the company. Train sets consisting of a control car , an n-car and an express train car , which were pulled or pushed by a Siemens ES64U2 ("Taurus") locomotive , initially ran on the RB 40 line . The locomotives were rented from Dispolok . These trains were also known colloquially as "Abellio Classic", which the company has since taken over. Since it was integrated into the Ruhr-Sieg network on August 7, 2007, Stadler Flirt locomotives have been used. The company's decision to initially use used vehicles is explained by the course of the tendering process. In 2004 Abellio initially received an order for the route limited to the years 2005 to 2007, so that the purchase of new vehicles for the route was not economically justifiable. Only after the end of the further tender in summer 2005 it was certain that the contract would be extended from 2007 for a further twelve years until 2019, the new trains were commissioned.
Ruhr-Sieg network
After winning the tender for the Ruhr-Sieg network, Abellio Rail NRW also took over the local rail transport services in the Ruhr-Sieg network for the timetable change on December 9, 2007 . In addition to the RB 40 previously included in the Emscher-Ruhrtal network, the network includes the RE 16 line from Essen via Hagen to Siegen and Iserlohn , as well as the RB 91 from Hagen on the same route. The special feature of a train division in Iserlohn-Letmathe in the direction of Iserlohn (formerly RB 56/58) and Siegen have RE 16 and RB 91 in common. In the Ruhr-Sieg network, electric multiple units of the Stadler FLIRT type are used, which travel 3.6 million train kilometers per year.
On December 5, 2016, the NWL and the VRR announced in a press release that Abellio Rail NRW will operate the Ruhr-Sieg network beyond 2019 for another 15 years after winning the tender. The electric multiple units already in use and modernized in 2015 will continue to be used, and will also be equipped with an audiovisual passenger information system. The RB 40 line, which was previously part of the Ruhr-Sieg network, will be integrated into the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn and will also be operated there by Abellio from 2019.
The owner of the Flirt railcars is the leasing company CB Rail .
