The Wupper-Lippe-Express in Oberhausen-Sterkrade

The Wupper-Lippe-Express ( RE 49 ) is an hourly regional express line in North Rhine-Westphalia belonging to the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr network . It connects Wesel an der Lippe via Oberhausen and Essen with Wuppertal an der Wupper .

The line is operated by Abellio Rail NRW on behalf of the VRR .

history

Line RE 49 was introduced with the timetable change on December 15, 2019. The basis for the creation of this line goes back to the change in the frequency of the S-Bahn lines in 2019. The connection arose from the observation that in Oberhausen the connection between line S 3 from Essen and lines RE 5, RE 19 and RB 35 towards Wesel is the most heavily used within the VRR and in this relation before the introduction of the Wupper-Lippe-Expresses did not have a direct connection. In addition, a study found that the thinning of the S-Bahn clock frequencies on the partially parallel lines S 3 and S 9 with the simultaneous introduction of an express service resulted in a more positive demand forecast. Even before the Wuppertal – Essen railway line was upgraded to become an S-Bahn line, the S9-Plus initiative promoted a fast local transport connection with comfortable vehicles between Wuppertal and Essen. Originally, it was planned for this long-term in advance that all cities in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region would be served by S-Bahn trains. However, this idea was discarded during the planning phase.

The RE 49 line replaces the Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn (RB 35) in the Wesel – Oberhausen section and connects the north branch of the S 3 with the south branch of the S 9 in Essen main station.

offer

The line only runs Monday to Friday between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. An extension of the operating hours is planned at a later point in time. Together with the Rhein-Express  (RE 5 (RRX)) and the Rhein-IJssel-Express  (RE 19), every 20 minutes is offered on the Wesel – Oberhausen section from Monday to Friday . The section from Oberhausen to Essen, together with the S 3, also receives a train frequency of three connections per hour. The same applies to the S 9 between Essen and Wuppertal. On these branches of the line, an hourly connection is added every 30 minutes from S 3 and S 9, but this does not stop at all stations.

vehicles

Stadler Flirt  3XL vehicles in a company-neutral VRR design are used on the line . The VRR acquired a total of 41 railcars of this type for lines S 2, S 3, S 9, S 28, RB 32, RB 40 and RE 49.

The VRR commissioned the manufacturer Stadler to maintain the vehicles . The vehicles are serviced in a workshop on the site of the former Shamrock colliery in Herne .
