The Wuppertal-Vohwinkel train station is the westernmost train station in the Wuppertal urban area and is located in the Vohwinkel district . It is a wedge station and belongs to station category 3.
history
The first two reception buildings
The first station building was put into operation in 1841 by the Düsseldorf-Elberfelder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . With the extension of the Prinz Wilhelm Railway , Vohwinkel became a railway junction in 1848 . The building in classical style was located in the Gleisdreieck between the routes to Elberfeld and Essen west of today's Lienhardplatz and today's Bahnstrasse .
In 1873 a new station building was built a little further south-west. It was located north of the terminus of the Wuppertal suspension railway, which went into operation in 1901, in the area of today's Stationsgarten square. This station is now referred to in literature as the old station . The current station building (called Neuer Bahnhof ) was put into operation several hundred meters northeast in 1908, the old station was then used as a cargo handling point and was demolished in 1973.
The new train station
The current building was built at the beginning of the 20th century by the Prussian State Railways according to plans by the Really Secret Senior Building Council and Lecturing Council in the Prussian Ministry of Public Works Alexander Rüdell and opened in 1908.
In the early 20th century, an approximately three-kilometer-long marshalling yard was added to the southwest , which is now completely closed and demolished. The Mittelstandspark VohRang was built on this and the adjacent areas of the signal workshop and the former railway nursery. In the northeast of the station there was a depot until 1971 , which was initially combined with the depot in Wuppertal-Steinbeck and later completely dissolved. The old roundhouse , which was a long reminder of this time, was closed in 2015.
In the heyday of its years there was not only the continuous Düsseldorf-Elberfeld railway line and the branch to the Prince Wilhelm Railway, but also a connecting line to the Wuppertal Northern Railway , which was closed in the 1990s, and a connection to the corkscrew railway .
Although the new InterCity train type, introduced in 1971, never stopped in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel as planned, it was at times the most important railway junction in Wuppertal.
Current situation
All long-distance trains run through the station without stopping. The regional express line Rhein-Münsterland-Express (RE 7) does not stop in Vohwinkel either. The Wupper-Express (RE 4) and Maas-Wupper-Express (RE 13), on the other hand, serve Vohwinkel in regular intervals and offer fast regional connections every half hour to the regional centers of Hagen, Düsseldorf and Mönchengladbach. Once an hour it goes to Hamm, Dortmund, Venlo and Aachen. Mondays to Fridays, Wuppertal-Vohwinkel is also served hourly by the Wupper-Lippe-Express (RE 49), which goes to Wesel via Essen, Mülheim and Oberhausen. In addition, the regional trains of the Rhein-Wupper-Bahn to Cologne stop twice an hour in Vohwinkel, and once an hour they go to Bonn-Mehlem.
However , Vohwinkel is a hub in the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network . The S-Bahn line S 8 connects Wuppertal with Düsseldorf, Neuss and Mönchengladbach every 20 minutes, twice an hour with Hagen and Schwelm, once an hour it goes to Witten and Dortmund, the S 9 changes to Essen, Bottrop and Haltern am See in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel from the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld line to the Prince Wilhelm Railway to Essen and vice versa. For this purpose, a new flyover structure was built before the S 9 went into operation. The S 9 passes under the mainline line when changing between the routes through a single-track tunnel. With the timetable change in December 2009, the S 11 repeater trains were no longer available because this line was restructured. Instead, the newly created S-Bahn line S 68 runs from Vohwinkel via Düsseldorf to Langenfeld (Rhineland) during rush hour .
The Wupper Express, the S 8 and the S 68 are operated by DB Regio , the Maas-Wupper Express by the Eurobahn . The British railway company National Express has been the operator of the Rhein-Wupper-Bahn since December 2015, and Abellio Rail NRW has been the operator of the newly introduced Wupper-Lippe-Express and the S 9 S-Bahn line since December 15, 2019 .
Platforms
Today there are four platforms, three on the Düsseldorf-Elberfeld route with a total of six tracks (1-6) and another on the Prinz Wilhelm Railway with tracks 11 and 12, where the S 9 has stopped since December 2003. Tracks 5, 6, 11 and 12 are the only tracks with wheelchair access. The S 8 stops on tracks 5 and 6. Tracks 11 and 12, on which the S 9 stops, have barrier-free access both through the station building and from the north of Vohwinkel. The S 68, the Rhein-Wupper-Bahn and the RE lines, on the other hand, cannot be reached in Vohwinkel for wheelchair users without assistance.
Future changes
The integrated overall traffic planning of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia provides that line S 28, which currently runs to Mettmann-Stadtwald, is to be extended to Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof . For this purpose, a new route is planned north of the lime works, which will flow into the Prinz Wilhelm Railway (see the article on the Düsseldorf-Derendorf – Dortmund Süd railway line ). Commissioning is planned for the end of 2020.
The city of Wuppertal is also calling for the Rhein-Münsterland-Express to stop in Vohwinkel. Even after the line has been re-tendered from 2016, the VRR does not provide for this and will only be added at a later date. Since 2016, the Rhein-Wupper-Bahn has been running every half hour to Bonn during rush hour, so there is now more frequent connections to the former federal capital. Furthermore, this line was extended in the other direction to Oberbarmen.
The transport services on the Wupper Express were also put out to tender in 2013, with National Express winning the tender for future operation from December 2020. In addition, the VRR plans on the Wupper Express from that moment and for the Rhine-Ruhr Express provided double-decker railcar of the type Siemens Desiro HC use.
From 2025 the Maas-Wupper-Express is to be extended beyond Venlo to Eindhoven .
Residential buildings are to be built on the seven-hectare site of the former depot on Nathrather Straße. However, the plans have not yet been implemented because the necessary backfilling of the site could not be carried out as planned for legal reasons.
Signal box
The interlocking of the train station Wuppertal-Vohwinkel Vpf (Wuppertal V ohwinkel P ersonenbahnhof, F ahrdienstleiter) of type Sp Dr S59 was opened in 1964 as part of the electrification of the Wuppertal valley section.
Connection to the local public transport
Several local and regional bus lines stop in front of the station. In addition, it was planned since 1985 to extend the trolleybus from Solingen from its previous terminus Vohwinkel suspension railway to Vohwinkel station. The prerequisite for this was the redesign of the station forecourt, the establishment of a small bus station and a better turning area on the site, which, along with other structural measures in the station forecourt, were implemented in early 2014.
The reconstruction of the square was made possible by funding from the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) in the amount of 556,000 euros, the necessary own contribution of around 100,000 euros was taken over by the municipal utilities of Wuppertal and Solingen together with the Clees Group as residents and users of the site. In connection with the renovation, dynamic passenger information systems were also installed at the station and the empty shops on the station forecourt were demolished. On May 13, 2014, the new forecourt was inaugurated with a decorated trolleybus from the Solingen public utility company . In August 2014, the trolleybus extension was officially put into operation.

The BürgerBahnhof project
The non-profit citizens' association Vohwinkel e. V. has been developing, promoting and realizing ideas and concepts for the revitalization of the reception building as an interim user since 2008 under the motto Project BürgerBahnhof . A multifunctional meeting point with around 50 public events a year was created in-house. The BürgerBahnhof is now an integral part of the independent Wuppertal cultural scene with an impact far beyond the district. Since 2014, the former express goods handling under the name KunstStation has also been used as a non-commercial project space for art exhibitions. On special occasions, the BürgerBahnhof (in consultation with Deutsche Bahn) also offers activities in the monumental ticket hall. The planting and maintenance of the green area on the station forecourt, cleaning of the surrounding area and the artistic redesign of a former row of shops by the artist Eckehard Lowisch were also initiated by the civic engagement of the association. The station users are also provided with a self-programmed departure monitor for the trains in Vohwinkel and the buses from the station forecourt in the group rooms that can be viewed from outside. There is also a true-to-scale model ( 1:87 ) of the old train station, which was built in 1873 and demolished in 1973, made by Karl Hundsdörfer based on old photos and plans . This model was set up on the occasion of the celebrations for the 175th anniversary of the railways in Vohwinkel .
The former post office building, which belongs to the station ensemble and has now been privatized, has been converted into senior citizens' apartments after years of neglect.
