Josep Lluís Mateo (born April 23, 1949 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish architect.

biography

Mateo has been working as an architect since 1974, having previously completed his architecture studies at the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura (ETSAB) in Barcelona.

From 1981 to 1990 he was director of the specialist journal "Quaderns d'Arquitectura i Urbanisme" , which during this period was awarded the ACCA Prize, LAUS Prize, Ciutat de Barcelona Prize and the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) was awarded.

In 1991 he founded the company "MAP Architects" in Barcelona and has been running the architecture office since 1995 together with Marta Cervelló . “MAP Architects” employs around 40 architects. Among other things, he planned the branch of the Landeszentralbank of the Deutsche Bundesbank in Chemnitz , the International Convention Center in Barcelona, ​​various tourism and office complexes in Locarno-Ascona , an office tower in Eurolille , the auditorium and museum for contemporary art in Castelo Branco , the new government headquarters in Haarlem and also amusement parks in Hangzhou and Qingpu .

Mateo has had a doctorate from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya since 1994 , was professor at ETSAB from 1996 to 2002 and also taught at various universities, including the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), and the Unité Pedagogique 8 (UP8) in Paris- Belville, the Oslo Amatørastronomers Forening (OAF), the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam and the Getty Center in Los Angeles . Since 2002 he has held the chair for architecture and design at the ETH in Zurich .

Awards

For his work he has received several international awards, including 1991 with the Italstat prize for young European architects and in the same year at the Biennale in Santander for remodeling of the heart of Ullastret and 1993 for the central building of the sports division of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona with the FAD Prize, which he was awarded repeatedly in 2000 for a social housing project in El Prat de Llobregat . At the Spanish Biennale for Architecture, he was one of the finalists with a residential building on the Borneo Island in the Amsterdam harbor (1999-2000) and was awarded the XV. Grupo Dragados Prize for Architecture and awarded by the CEOE (2001).
