Location of the municipality

Ullastret is a Spanish municipality in the Baix Empordà administrative district in the Girona province in the Comunidad Autónoma Catalonia . The area of ​​Ullastret is about 11 km².

The center of the municipality is located on a hill about 50 meters above sea ​​level , east of the Río Daró. Ullastret is best reached on the road between La Bisbal and Serra de Daró . The population of Ullastret in 2019 was 290 people. The main pillars of the municipality's economy are tourism and agriculture.

On the nearby Puig de Sant Andreu was from the beginning of the Iron Age until the 3rd century BC. An Iberian hill settlement (so-called oppidum , see main article: Ullastret (oppidum) ). The Puig de Sant Andreu is an approximately triangular hill, 600 m long in north-south direction and 380 m wide in east-west direction, which rises 54 m above the basin of the former lake Estany d'Ullastret . Until the 19th century the municipality had this lake, which covered an area of ​​three square kilometers, but has now dried up. The lake basin was converted into arable land. However, in times of heavy rainfall, the lake surface is still flooded today.
