Torroella de Montgrí is a municipality in the comarque Baix Empordà , in the province of Girona , Catalonia , Spain .
geography
The city center of Torroella lies on the Ampurdan plain, at the foot of the Montgrí mountain range (hence the name) and on the north bank of the River Ter . The place is not to be confused with the Torroella de Fluvià , about 15 km to the northwest, on the Fluvià .
Site structure
The place received market rights in 1273 and was systematically laid out, as indicated by the checkered street pattern. The historic center from the Middle Ages, which was surrounded by a city wall, is still preserved. There is the church of Sant Genís and remains of the El Mirador castle. From the former city fortifications, a tower, the Torre de les Bruixes, the Santa Caterina city gate and part of the city wall still exist today. The Plaça Major, lined with arcades, has formed the city center.
history
On May 27, 1694, the Battle of the River Ter (also called the Battle of Torroella) took place in Torroella de Montgrí between Spain and France . In connection with the Palatine War of Succession (1688-1697) , the Duke of Noailles with 24,000 men and Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco with 16,000-24,000 men faced each other. The battle was decided in France's favor.

Others
The neighboring town of l'Estartit on the Costa Brava, which is heavily influenced by tourism and is under the administrative sovereignty of Torroella, applied for the administrative independence of Torroella from around 2000. However, this was refused and led to many discussions.
