Cala (geography)
Cala (plural Sp. Calas / Cat. Cales , Spanish “bay”, Catalan “small bay”) are small, medium and larger bays that have been cut into the cliffs of the coastline at the end of a dry valley by a torrent in its mouth area and have filled themselves with sand .
Typically the sandy beach is rather short and the sea water is limited on both sides by a line of rocks. From the deep beach you can look out over the sea as if through an alley. The swell undermines or erodes the rock line. The bays are an ideal protected habitat for fish and their offspring.
The Cala Coast can be found, for example, on the islands of Ibiza , Mallorca or in Catalonia in the western Mediterranean .
