The Río Fluvià is a coastal river about 97 kilometers long in the north of Catalonia ( Spain ).

course

The Río Fluvià rises in the mountains of Collsacabra ( Falgars d'en Bas ) in the south of the municipality of La Vall d'en Bas near Olot at an altitude of about 920 meters above sea level. d. M .; the streams draining from the east the mountains and the plain of La Vall d'en Bas into the Fluvià - the Riera de Joanetes with the waterfall of Roure (Salt del Roure) and the Riera del Sallent with the waterfall of Salent (Salt de Sallent) , also called El Gurn from the confluence of the Riera de Gorners - must be addressed as the source rivers of the Fluvià. The Fluvià then flows through the cities of Olot, Castellfollit de la Roca , Besalú , Esponellà and Torroela de Fluvià and flows into the Gulf of Roses ( Mediterranean Sea ) at the level of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park and near the town of Sant Pere Pescador . It flows through the Comarques Garrotxa and Alt Empordà . The ancient city of Empúries was located at the former estuary . The main tributaries are the Ser , Gurn , Llerca and Oix .

Special

The middle and lower reaches of the Río Fluvià lead to heavy flooding in the mountains when it rains continuously or after heavy thunderstorms. On October 18, 1940, a catastrophic tidal wave occurred in the Olot area, which swept mills (e.g. the El Collell mill a few kilometers west of Olot) and other buildings near the water, including residents. The two destroyed bridges at Castellfollit de la Roca also testify to the destructive power of the tranquil little river. The medieval Pont Trencat , built on Roman foundations, fell victim to a huge tidal wave in 1641. Particularly beautiful and striking is the Fluvià bridge in Besalú , which has been preserved from the Middle Ages .

Attractions

The sight of the small town of Castellfollit, located on a rock, is spectacular. The tower-reinforced medieval bridge at Besalú and the town itself are also impressive.
