Bàscara is a place and a municipality ( municipi ) with 1,004 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Girona in the autonomous region of Catalonia . It is located in the Comarca Alt Empordà .
location
The place Bàscara is located on a small hill above the south bank of the Riu Fluvià at an altitude of about 65 meters above sea level. d. M. about 40 kilometers (driving distance) south of the Spanish-French border town Le Perthus ; the provincial capital Girona is a further 27 kilometers to the south-west. The municipality also includes the villages of Orriols , Calabuig and Les Roques .

In the 19th century, the community usually had well over 1000 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture led to a loss of jobs in the first half of the 20th century and a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lowest levels in the 1980s and 1990s. The resurgence in population is due to the overall positive economic development in Catalonia.

Agriculture and viticulture are the main livelihoods of the inhabitants. Since the 1960s, tourism has developed into an important source of income in the form of vacation rental.
history
The first mention of the place name ( Villa Baschara ) comes from the year 817; at that time, Bàscara belonged to the diocese of Girona . A church is first mentioned in 1020. In the 13./14. In the 19th century, the place was surrounded by a city wall. During the War of the Reunions , French troops occupied the place in 1684. Something similar happened under Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808/09. The baroque carved altar of the Sant Iscle church from 1698 was lost during the destruction of the church in the Spanish Civil War (1936).
Attractions
Bàscara
- The single-nave parish church of Sant Iscle was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Century, which was, however, thoroughly revised in the 18th and 19th centuries. The bell tower with its battlements makes a defensive impression. The interior, which was destroyed in 1936, now has a simple baroque design; the modern apse window echoes the art of Joan Miró .
- Remains of the medieval city wall ( muralles ) have been preserved.
Calabuig
- The church of Sant Feliu is mentioned as early as the 12th century; it could have belonged to a castle.
- Two kilometers southeast of the small hamlet are the remains of the medieval priory of Sant Nicolau .
Orriols
- The former parish church of Sant Genís still shows some Romanesque parts.
- The Castell-Palau d'Orriols is a 17th century Renaissance palace on a rectangular floor plan with an inner courtyard and medieval reminiscences. Today it is used for event purposes.
