Figueres [ fiˈɣeɾəs ] ( unofficial Spanish Figueras ) is a city in the province of Girona in the autonomous region of Catalonia , Spain . It is located on the Costa Brava , has 46,654 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and is the capital of the Alt Empordà . The city is 28 m above sea level.
history
The city is dominated by the octagonal fortress Castell de Sant Ferran from the 18th century . With an area of 32 hectares, this military fortress was built for 6,000 people and 500 horses and is now the largest bulwark fortress built in Europe in the 18th century. The military history museum of Figueres ( Museo Histórico Militar de Figueres in Spanish ) has been located inside the fortress since January 2010 .
Cultural institutions
- The city theater Teatre Museu Salvador Dalí , which Dalí has converted into a museum, with the Torre Gorgot on the old city wall, is one of the best-visited museums in Spain.
- Other museums in Figueres are the Technical Museum , the Toy Museum , the art museum Museu de l'Emporda and the Museum of Naive Art .
- The Estadi Municipal de Figueres holds around 9500 visitors

Figueres is located on the Autopista AP-7 motorway and is approximately 50 km from Girona's Costa Brava airport. To the east of the old town is the city's train station on the broad-gauge Barcelona – Cerbère line with regional and national connections of Renfe , Spain's state railway.
In December 2010, the Figueres-Vilafant train station opened on the high-speed line between Barcelona and Perpignan and has direct TGV connections to Paris and Barcelona. There are also AVE connections to Madrid and Barcelona.
Figueres also has a local bus company, TMF , which operates three lines and is currently running an electric test bus .
