In the 19th century the community had mostly around 650 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture led to the loss of jobs in the first half of the 20th century and a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lows in the 1970s and 1980s. The resurgence in population is due to the overall positive economic development in Catalonia.

economy

Agriculture and viticulture are the main livelihoods of the inhabitants. Since the 1960s, tourism has become an integral part of the economy.

history

Some small Neolithic finds were made in the municipality; the remains of a country estate ( villa rustica ) date from Roman times . In documents of the 10th century the place was called Sant Esteve de Manibulo or Sant Esteve de Manol ; the current name Avinyonet is only found in documents of the county Besalú from the years 1090 and 1107. Two decades later (1128) the place and its castle were conquered by the counts of Empúries . A papal bull from 1176 confirmed that the church of Sant Esteve d'Avinyó belonged to the abbey of Santa Maria de Vilabertran, about five kilometers to the northeast .

Culture and sights

Deviating from the usual orientation of a medieval church, the entrance is in the east and the altar in the west.
  • Immediately next to the church are the remains of the old building to come.
  • About one kilometer south of the village is the originally Romanesque chapel of the Ermita de Santa Eugènia , which was rebuilt in the 17th century, with a simple bell gable ( espadanya ).
  • Also outside are the massive foundation walls of a previously unidentified structure ( El Castellot ), which could have been an outpost of the Templar Castle.
  • In the area there are several stone huts made of dry stone masonry ( cabanas ), which were mostly used as shelter for guards shortly before the grape harvest; later shepherds may also have used the buildings.
