The city of Roses ( Catalan [ ˈrɔzəs ]; Spanish Rosas [ ˈrosas ]) is located in the autonomous region of Catalonia in Spain and has 19,550 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It is located in the comarca Alt Empordà on the northern edge of the Gulf of Roses in the province of Girona .

history

The region was already settled in prehistoric times . Evidence of the megalithic culture can be found in the Parc Megalític de Roses . There are three large dolmens and the menhirs de la Casa Cremada , which dates from around 3000 BC. To date. The fortress Ciutadella de Roses , the old city, covers 131,480 square meters and contains archaeological finds with the remains of the 776 BC. By the Rhodians (or, according to more recent research, by the Greeks from Massilia in the 4th century ) at the confluence of a small Torrente , a Greek settlement of Rhode . It is to them that Roses derives its name.

In Roses there was a Roman settlement in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The remains are in the ground. However, the imposing entrance gate to the fortress city was not built by King Charles I until the 16th century . A fort ( Castrum visigòtic ) built by the Visigoths in the 7th century on the Puig Rom can still be recognized in its structures today. Below this 240 meter high mountain, at a height of 60 meters above sea level, lies the Castell de la Trinitat . It is a fortress that was also built under Emperor Charles V , the Spanish Carlos I , in 1544 to dominate the entrance to the bay. From here you have a view of the Empordà and the Pyrenees . In the 18th century, the old city was abandoned after being destroyed and rebuilt to the north around the church. The citadel fell into disrepair.

After the Spanish Civil War general ordered Franco above the rocky coast verbunkerte gun batteries built to a possible invasion of the Allied military off the extensive sandy beaches in the Bay of Roses to meet.

Roses borders the Cap de Creus peninsula ( nature reserve ), which forms the easternmost point of continental Spain. Neighboring towns are: the channel-laced tourist plan city Empuriabrava (to the municipality Castello d'Empuries ), Cadaqués , El Port de la Selva , Palau-saverdera and La Selva de Mar . Urbanizations stretch up the mountains to the top of the local mountain. The almost three kilometer long sandy beach in the city area runs between the new marina, built in 2003, and the Riu Grau in the south. This is followed by the following bays to the north:

  • Canyelles Petites
  • Big (lighthouse)
  • l'Almadrava
  • Cap Norfeu
  • Punta Falconera
  • Cala Jóncols
  • Cala Montjoi

Due to its proximity to the Pyrenees , Roses is often in the area of influence of the strong north wind, the Tramuntana .

economy

The city's main source of income has been tourism since the early 1960s . In the main season, around 100,000 tourists populate the four campsites, around 50 hotels and numerous holiday homes and apartments. In the vicinity there is agriculture, such as olive cultivation, vegetable cultivation, wine and livestock farming.

In addition, with the Port de Roses, Roses has one of the most important and largest fishing ports and currently the most modern sports port in Catalonia. The first reference to the Bay of Roses, which was a natural harbor at the time, came from the year 218 BC, when Roses was a Roman settlement.

The fishing fleet still works with around 40 boats exclusively close to the coast. The fish is auctioned directly in the fish hall . As fishing continues to decline, recreational boating takes its place. In the summer of 2004 the most modern marina on the Costa Brava was inaugurated on the port area ; it offers berths for 485 boats and for yachts up to 35 meters in length.
