The Port de Roses is one of the three largest fishing ports in Catalonia in terms of catch volume and fishing fleet; At the same time, the entire port complex with the PORTROSES  - using shared access and supply routes - accommodates the most modern sports port on the Costa Brava . The harbor ensemble is located at the eastern end of the city of Roses .

history

The natural harbor in 1645, engraving after Sébastien de Beaulieu

The natural harbor in the bay of Roses was mentioned by the Romans as early as 218 BC when they first called the mainland of the Iberian Peninsula with ships.

In the 13th and 14th centuries it belonged to the county of Empúries ; During this period, the Bay of Roses was the scene of naval battles several times , particularly against neighboring France .

The natural port of Roses became an important base for important coastal shipping between Italy , France and the Iberian Peninsula in the 18th and 19th centuries .

In 1902, work began on building and expanding the previously unfortified natural harbor with man-made jetties ; In 1930 additions and expansions to the port facility were added, which continued into the 1960s.

The Port de Roses was given its current appearance in 2004 after the extensive expansion and expansion work at the sports harbor was completed.

Fishing

The fishing fleet still works with around 40 boats exclusively close to the coast. The professional fishermen leave at sunrise on weekdays and return to the port of Roses with their catch around 5:00 p.m. A few minutes later, the fish and seafood are already being auctioned off to the highest bidder on the port site in the local auction hall . There is also a fish factory near the port, which processes anchovies in particular into canned foods.

Marina

In summer 2004, the most modern marina on the Costa Brava was inaugurated with PORTROSES, which was directly incorporated into the fishing port to the north ; it offers berths for 485 boats, 374 of which are permanently booked. The port entrance is about seventy meters wide and nine meters deep and yachts up to 45 meters in length can moor in the Marina of Roses; the minimum depth in the marina is 3.5 meters.
