The Seabourn Cruise Line is a brand of the British - American cruise company Carnival Corporation & plc . It differs from other group brands in that it has more luxurious but smaller ships and an average age of 40 to 60 years. The associated ships are operated by Holland America Group , an operating subsidiary of the group with headquarters in Seattle , Washington .

The shipping company of the same name, which was founded in Norway in 1987, initially merged with Cunard , but was eventually taken over by Carnival together with the latter and has now been fully integrated into the group.

history

Seabourn Cruise Line was founded in 1987 by a consortium led by the Norwegian industrialist Atle Brynestad under the name Signet Cruise Line . In order to avoid a legal dispute with Signet Oil over the naming rights, the name was changed shortly after the establishment. Cruise operations began in November 1988 with the Seabourn Pride . The sister ship Seabourn Spirit was added a year later. A third ship, planned for takeover in 1990 and already ordered from Schichau Seebeck, exceeded the financial leeway of the investors. It was instead completed for Royal Viking Line as the Royal Viking Queen .

As early as 1991, the Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise operator, acquired a 25 percent stake in Seabourn and increased this to 50 percent in 1996. The capital was now available to buy the third ship and add it to the fleet as the Seabourn Legend .

In 1998 Seabourn Cruise Line merged with the British Cunard Line Ltd. During the same period, a consortium, which also included Carnival Corporation , acquired the Cunard shipping company from Kvaerner ASA . A year later, the Cunard Line was completely taken over by Carnival. After the Carnival Corporation & plc was established in 2003, a reorganization followed, in which Seabourn Cruise Line was separated from Cunard and set up as an independent group subsidiary for luxury cruises.

After more than 15 years, Seabourn Cruise Line put a new cruise ship back into service in 2009 with the Seabourn Odyssey . This was followed by the identical ships Seabourn Sojourn 2010 and the third ship in the Odyssey class, the Seabourn Quest in 2011 . With the commissioning of the second ship of this larger type of ship designed for 450 passengers each, the marketing name The Yachts of Seabourn was dropped.

In April 2010 the Seabourn Sojourn received the Silver Award for “Best New Cruise Ship of 2010” from the European Cruiser Association (EUCRAS). The following year, the Seabourn Quest, baptized in Barcelona, ​​received the Gold Award.

In March 2011, Carnival dissolved Seabourn's headquarters in Miami , Florida , and transferred operational control to the Holland-America Group in Seattle, Washington. In the winter of 2013/2014, the three original Seabourne ships were sold to Xanterra Parks & Resorts, the new owner of Windstar Cruises, which was also previously sold by Carnival . The Seabourn Pride counts as Star Pride since 2014 Windstar fleet, agreed for the other two ships to until the change in April and May 2015 still continued operation through leasing. After renovation in Genoa for three weeks each and USD 8.5 million each , the sister ships Seabourn Spirit as Star Breeze and Seabourn Legend as Star Legend followed their type ship.

To compensate, Carnival Corp & plc ordered a 40,350 GT and 210 meter long newbuilding from Fincantieri in January 2014 , the Seabourn Encore , which was put into service for the Seabourne brand in December 2016. Another new build, the Seabourn Ovation , was ordered in late 2014 and undocked on September 1, 2017. The Seabourn Ovation was delivered on April 27, 2018.

In July 2018, a letter of intent was signed with Mariotti Damen, a joint venture between the Damen Shipyards Group and T. Mariotti, to build two 170-meter-long ships measured at 23,000 GT. They should be delivered in 2021 and 2022.

Brand characteristics

The Seabourn Cruise Line is advertised as a pioneer in the "luxury cruises" sector and the ships belonging to it have received numerous awards. In particular, the relatively small first ships that were marketed as “yachts” had a very generous space ratio (48–71 GT / passenger), high-quality equipment and special service compared to the industry . The same applies to the three newbuildings, even if they can hardly be described as yachts with 450 guests on board.
