Navata is a place and a municipality ( municipi ) with 1,381 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Girona in the autonomous region of Catalonia . It is located in the Comarca Alt Empordà .
location
The place Navata is at an altitude of about 145 meters above sea level. d. The city of Figueres is about ten kilometers (driving distance) to the northeast and the provincial capital Girona is about 40 kilometers to the south. The hamlets of Canelles and Torremirona also belong to the municipality .

In the 19th century the community usually had over 1,000 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture only made themselves felt in the 1940s.
economy
Above all, agriculture (grain, sunflowers, etc.), but also keeping cattle and poultry in stalls, form the livelihood of the inhabitants. Since the 1960s, tourism has developed into an important source of income in the form of vacation rental.
history
In 1019 the connection of the church Sant Pere de Navata to the diocese of Girona is documented. The first mention of a castle ( castillo ) comes from 1099; in the High Middle Ages Navata belonged to the county of Empúries .
