Castelló d'Empúries is a medieval town in the Catalan province of Girona . It is located about 140 kilometers north of Barcelona on the Gulf of Roses and is the former capital of the county of Empúries .

Sub-locations

The municipality consists of two parts:

  • Castelló d'Empúries, the "old town", with around 4000 inhabitants
  • Empuriabrava the beach resort founded in 1960 (originally called Ampuriabrava ). This urbanization is criss-crossed by 30 km of canals, with around 7650 inhabitants.

Events

The medieval festival Terra de Trobadors , which lasts several days and is intended in particular to remind of the old times when Castelló d'Empúries was still the capital of the county of Empúries, enjoys national importance .

Municipal coat of arms

The coat of arms consists of a square escutcheon on top and a crown floating over it, which is supposed to remind of the former county of Empúries . The coat of arms shows the eponymous castle in front of a background striped in Catalan colors.

Attractions

The landmark of the place is the Basilica Santa Maria , a Gothic church that was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is also known under the name "Catedral de l'Empordà" or "Catedral de Castelló d'Empúries", although it never had the status of a cathedral .
