Ihar Hermjantschuk (born January 1, 1961 in Strakawitschy near Swetlahorsk , Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic , Soviet Union ; † April 29, 2002 in Minsk ) was an opposition Belarusian politician and journalist, editor-in-chief of the Minsk opposition newspaper "Swaboda" (Freedom) and the "Kurjer" Magazine.

Political activity

In the last years of the Soviet Union , Hermjantschuk campaigned for the independence of Belarus and became a member of the opposition Belarusian Popular Front (BNF). In 1990, at the age of 29, he became one of the youngest MPs in the history of the Supreme Soviet of the Belarusian SSR . In 1995 he went on a hunger strike together with other BNF members to protest against the referendum initiated by President Aljaksandr Lukashenka on the state symbols and the official language of the Republic of Belarus . With the referendum, Lukashenka sought to abolish the state symbolism dating back to the pre-Soviet period and the Belarusian independence movement and to upgrade Russian to the second official language. On the night of April 12, 1995, the hunger strike was violently ended. The BNF MPs said they were mistreated by the security forces.

Journalistic activity

Ihar Hermjantschuk was editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Swaboda”, which under his leadership became an important Belarusian opposition medium. Hermjantschuk was investigated four times for publications critical of the regime. In 1997 Swaboda was revoked its newspaper license. However, just one year later, Hermjantschuk started a new project under the name Nawiny ( German  news ).

Ihar Hermjantschuk died of cancer in 2002.
