Lyavon Perschtscheuski ( / barʃtʃɛwski / ; born March 4, 1958 in Polatsk , Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic , Soviet Union ) is a Belarusian philologist and opposition politician.

Life

Barschtscheuski attended the Minsk Pedagogical Institute since 1975, where he has been a graduate since 1980. His focus was on English and German. Lecturer at the Polytechnic Institute in Nawapolazk 1981–1984 and 1987–1990. He received his PhD in 1987.

In 1985 Barschtscheuski founded the young translator club “Babylon” together with Sjarhej Schup. He translated from ancient Greek, Latin, German, English, French, Polish, and Spanish. He translated Aeschylus (published 1993), Petrarca , Kafka , Brecht , Lenau (1991) and Böll (1993).

Perschtscheuski was co-founder and since 1991 deputy director of the Belarusian Humanistic Lyceum , which was closed by the government in 2003. Since 2006, Barschtscheuski has been the editor of the book series “Biblioteka białoruska” published in Wroclaw , in which the works of Wassil Bykau , Ryhor Baradulin , Alherd Bacharewitsch , Andrej Chadanowitsch and Uladsimir Arlou have appeared.

1990–1995 Perschtscheuski was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR , later of the Republic of Belarus . There he was a member of the Parliament's Committee on Education, Culture and Historical Heritage and the Committee on International Relations and Foreign Trade. 1996-1999 he chaired the in opposition to President Alexander Lukashenko standing Belarusian Popular Front right after the chairman Paznjak had emigrated. The literary scholar , journalist and translator was the chairman of the Belarusian PEN Club from 2003 to 2005. At the 10th Congress of the Belarusian Popular Front in December 2007, Perschcheuski was elected chairman of the party. In September 2009 he was defeated by his party comrade Alyaksej Yanukewitsch in internal party elections , who replaced him as chairman.
