Swetlahorsk or Swetlogorsk ( Byelorussian Светлагорск / Svietlahorsk ) is a city in Belarus in Homelskaya Woblasz with 71,661 inhabitants. It is located about 230 km south of Minsk on the Bjaresina .

Over 70,000 people live in Svetlahorsk. The population is made up of 88.6% Belarusians , 8.7% Russians , 1.7% Ukrainians , as well as small Romanic , Jewish , Polish and Tatar minorities.
history
Before Svetlahorsk was founded, there was a small village called Shatilki there . This is said to have been founded by Raman Shatila. The first known mention of the village Shatilki took place on June 15, 1560. It was located on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . From 1772 the community belonged to the Russian Empire and was completely burned down in 1797.
On July 17, 1924, the town of Parichi was founded, to which Shatilki also belonged. Since December 30, 1956 Paritschi was recognized as a small town. On July 29, 1961, it was renamed Svetlahorsk and has been a major city since 1963.
Attractions
Heavy industry areas are located in the city. There has been a power plant in Svetlahorsk since 1954 and, since 1960, the largest European synthetic fiber plant. The cityscape is predominantly characterized by a uniform panel building style, only the historic district of Shatilki still has traditional Russian blockhouse settlements . Some Catholic and Orthodox churches are also worth seeing. There are also several memorials to the victims of the Second World War and a memorial to the soldiers of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan . Svetlahorsk has had its own historical museum since 1979.
