Chojniki ( Belarusian Хойнікі ; Russian Хойники Choiniki ) is a city in Homelskaya Woblasz in southeast Belarus . The city with about 12,300 inhabitants is the administrative center of the Chojniki Raion .

Geographical location

The city is located at an altitude of 128  m , 100 km southwest of Homel and 60 km east of Mazyr . Chojniki has a station through it with Homel, Wassilewitschy ( Васілевічы ) and Kalinkavichy is connected. In the south of the city the trunk road P-33 meets the P-35 .

South of Chojniki is the Polish State Radio-Ecological Protected Area , which was established after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, 60 km to the south, in today's Ukraine .

history

Chojniki was first in 1512 as a village in the county Brahin the Kiev province in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania mentioned in writing. From August 25, 1941 to November 23, 1943, the village was occupied by the Wehrmacht .

On October 10, 1967, Chojniki received city status. The region around Chojniki has been one of the areas hardest hit by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster since 1986.
