Bielsk Podlaski [ ˈbʲɛlsk pɔdˈlaskʲi ] ( Lithuanian Bielskas ; Belarusian Бельск-Падляскі , Biêlśk Pudláśki ) is a city in Poland in the eponymous district of the Podlaskie Voivodeship , located on the Białystokiała about 50 kilometers south of Białystokiała .
history
When the place was first mentioned in 1253 as part of the Rus principality of Halych-Volhynia , it was already considered an old settlement. Presumably it already existed at the beginning of the 11th century, founded by the prince of Kievan Rus Yaroslav the Wise . In the first half of the 14th century, the place was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . In 1430 he received city rights. In 1495 the city charter was granted according to Magdeburg law . Bielsk Podlaski was already an important handicraft town. After 1520 it became the center of Bielsk in the Podlaskie Voivodeship . In 1569 the city became part of Poland, in 1795 it fell to Prussia and in 1807 to Russia.
The connection to the rail network took place in 1873 on the Königsberg - Brest line . About 7,000 people lived in the city at that time.
On September 23, 1939, the place was occupied by Soviet troops. The following German occupation lasted until July 30, 1944. With the renewed invasion of the Red Army , the Second World War came to an end for Bielsk Podlaski. About 70% of the place was destroyed.
The traditional Jewish community of Bielsk was completely destroyed in the course of the German occupation.
