NGC 696 is a 13.5 mag bright lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a with an angular extent of 1.7 '× 0.6' in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is an estimated 358 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 180,000 light years in diameter. It probably forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair with NGC 698 .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 1739 .
The object was discovered on November 29, 1837 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
