NGC 717 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is an estimated 228 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light-years across . The galaxy is a member of the Abell 262 cluster .
The galaxies NGC 708 , NGC 709 , NGC 710 , NGC 714 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on October 28, 1850 by Bindon Blood Stoney , an assistant to William Parsons .
