NGC 740 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBb in the constellation Triangle in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 212 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 736 , NGC 738 , NGC 739 , NGC 750 .

The object was discovered on October 11, 1850 by Bindon Blood Stoney , an assistant to William Parsons .
