NGC 747 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 241 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 70,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 713 , NGC 731 , NGC 755 , NGC 767 , among others .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
