NGC 731 = NGC 757 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 172 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 85,000 ly.
In the same area of ​​the sky are the galaxies NGC 713 , NGC 747 , NGC 755 , NGC 763 , among others .

The object was discovered on January 10, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel (as NGC 731) and in 1886 by the American astronomer Ormond Stone (as NGC 757).
