NGC 762 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated that 220 million light-years from the Milky Way away and has a diameter of about 90,000 light years.
In the same area of the sky are among others the galaxies NGC 748 , NGC 779 , IC 183 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 1988ab was observed here.
The object was discovered on November 22, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
