IC 183 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale in the southern sky . It is an estimated 171 million light years from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 65,000 ly. Together with NGC 829 , NGC 830 , NGC 842 and NGC 788 , it forms the NGC 788 group .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 762 , NGC 779 , NGC 790 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 7, 1893 .
