NGC 842 is the name of a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Whale in the New General Catalog . It is an estimated 173 million light years from the Milky Way . Together with NGC 829 , NGC 830 , NGC 788 and IC 183 , it forms the NGC 788 group .
The galaxy was by astronomer John Herschel using on 8 January 1831 of a 18.7-inch - telescope discovered.
