NGC 858 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated 550 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 210,000 ly.
It is discussed whether NGC 858 is gravitationally related to the galaxy 2MASXJ02123376-2228092 (also NGC 858-2 ). It is not known whether the galaxies are really a physical pair or just an optical double .
In the same area of the sky there are still u. a. the galaxies NGC 836 , NGC 837 , NGC 849 .
The property was discovered by Francis Leavenworth in 1886 .
