NGC 868 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 361 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 863 and NGC 856 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was on 3 October 1886 by Lewis A. Swift using a 16-inch - telescope discovered.
