NGC 879 is an irregular galaxy of Hubble type Irr in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 177 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter.
The object was by astronomer Francis Leavenworth use in 1886 of a 26-inch - telescope discovered.
