NGC 862 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Phoenix the southern sky . It is an estimated 237 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter. It is the brightest galaxy in the NGC 862 group ( LGG 50 ) and presumably forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair with PGC 200050 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on September 5, 1834 .
