NGC 822 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E5 in the constellation Phoenix on southern sky . It is an estimated 239 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 862 and PGC 8028 , it forms the small NGC 862 group ( LGG 50 ).
The object was discovered on September 5, 1834 by the astronomer John Herschel .
