NGC 835 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 182 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is the brightest member of the NGC 835 group ( LGG 49 ).
Together with NGC 833 , NGC 838, and NGC 839 , it forms a group of galaxies that is cataloged as the Hickson Compact Group (HCG) 16 ( Arp 318 ).

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This group of galaxies belongs to the class of galaxies .

The object was discovered by William Herschel on November 28, 1785 .
