NGC 817 is a galaxy of Hubble type S? in the constellation Aries on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 205 million light years from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 40,000 ly.
The object was on 2 September 1886 by the astronomer Lewis A. Swift using a 40-cm - telescope discovered.
