NGC 840 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 327 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 175,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 827 .
The object was on 2 September 1864 by the astronomer Albert Marth use on a 48-inch - telescope discovered.
