Lists of aviation accidents

On July 9, 1973 there was an incident on a Tupolev Tu-124 on the internal Soviet scheduled flight Aeroflot flight 5385 from Kuibyshev to Simferopol , in which two of the 61 occupants died and the aircraft was badly damaged.

plane

The aircraft was a nine-year-old Tupolev Tu-124W with the air vehicle registration CCCP-45062, which was completed on 20 May 1964 and with two turbofan engines of the type Soloviev D-20 was equipped P.

crew

The crew consisted of a flight captain , a first officer , a flight engineer , a navigator , two flight attendants and a police officer .

course

The aircraft took off at 7.42 p.m. and was climbing at 6,600 m when the right engine suffered unrestrained damage at 7:53 p.m., 97 to 100 km from Kuibyshev Airport, near the town of Shigony . The debris penetrated the outer skin , killing two passengers in the 12th row of seats and injuring four others, resulting in explosive decompression . In the cabin , this caused panic among the passengers, as a result of which they moved into the front cabin and thereby shifted the center of gravity forward, which made flight control more difficult. The pilots switched off the right engine, activated its engine extinguishing system , and initiated an emergency descent . Finally the flight attendants and the police officer managed to convince the passengers to sit down again. At 8:05 p.m. the plane landed at Kuibyshev Airport. Finally, further damage was found on the ground in the area between the 37th and 38th frame , as well as on the landing flaps and the ailerons on the right side of the aircraft.

root cause

Design and manufacturing errors were found to be the cause of the failure of the right engine.

additional

The aircraft was then repaired, returned to service and repainted in the new Aeroflot colors in 1974. It was finally taken out of service on July 18, 1980.
