NGC 848 is a barred spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 178 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 80,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 833 , NGC 835 , NGC 838 , NGC 839 .
The object was discovered by Ormond Stone on December 11, 1885 .
