NGC 833 is an active , lens-shaped galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 178 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light-years across.
NGC 838 together with NGC 833 , NGC 835 and NGC 839 form a group of galaxies , which is cataloged as Hickson Compact Group 16 ( Arp 318 ).
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This group of galaxies belongs to the class of galaxies .
The Type II supernova SN 2005H was observed here.
The object was discovered by William Herschel on November 28, 1785 .
