NGC 3786 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active galaxy core of the Hubble type SBa / P in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 119 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 3788 , it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 294 , KPG 295 or Holm 272 . Together with three other galaxies, it forms the NGC 3788 group or LGG 243 .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class of galaxies with long filaments .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 2946 and IC 2947 .

The supernovae SN 1999bu (type Ic) and SN 2004bd ( type Ia ) were observed here.

The object was discovered on April 10, 1831 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
