NGC 545 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 241 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 185,000 ly. It is the brightest member of the Abell 194 galaxy cluster . Together with NGC 547 , it forms the galaxy pair Arp 308 or KPG 32 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 535 , NGC 541 , NGC 543 , NGC 548 .
The object was discovered on October 1, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
