NGC 547 is an elliptical galaxy in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 247 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 135,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 541 , NGC 543 , NGC 545 , NGC 548 . Together with NGC 545, it forms the galaxy pair Arp 308 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .
The object was discovered on October 1, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
