NGC 536 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 238 million light years from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 225,000 ly.
Together with the galaxies NGC 529 , NGC 531 and NGC 542 , it forms the Hickson Compact Group 10 ( HCG 10 ).
The Type II supernova SN 1963N was observed here.
The object was discovered on September 13, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel .
