NGC 524 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 111 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 516 , NGC 518 , NGC 525 , NGC 532 .

The supernovae SN 2000cx (Type-IaP) and SN 2008Q ( Type-Ia ) were observed here.

The object was discovered on September 4, 1786 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel and was later included in the New General Catalog .
