NGC 501 is a compact elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 230 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 35,000 ly.
In the same area of ​​the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 496 , NGC 498 , NGC 499 , IC 1684 .

The object was discovered on October 28, 1856 by RJ Mitchell , an assistant to William Parsons .
